The Windrush
Project
The Windrush Intergenerational Project was developed by the African Community Centre to work with young people in schools to research the lives of the Windrush generation who arrived in Wales from the West Indies in the 50’s, 60’s and later.
The project seeks to bridge the gap between the older and younger generations especially with regards to passing down culture, tradition, journeys, settlement and other experiences. Along with recording and documenting the amazing contributions that Black and Ethnic Minority migrants have brought to the UK and to Swansea/Neath Port Talbot in particular.

At the heart of the project were several enthusiastic and creative young people from the Swansea area, who carried out all the interviews, filmmaking, artwork and also helped produce the publication. Alongside producing these amazing artefacts to be archived for the future, they also achieved an Art Award for their endeavours.

As part of their Art Award attached to this project, the participants have been researching American artist Tamara Madden, originally from Jamaica.
They have engaged in drawing and painting classes with artist Tim Stokes, who has also been leading their technical film workshops, to explore similar working methods to that of Tamara. As part of their research, they were able to Skype Tamara and ask her many questions about her life and her artwork. You can see some of the interview in the video below.
